"barf bowl" discourse was started by someone whose family had a designated large bowl to puke in when sick, and perpetuated by people who think this is normal/weird or fine/gross in turns.

"poop knife" discourse was, as far as I know, just one post on reddit about a knife kept in the bathroom to break up difficult turds to aid a weak old toilet in flushing, and the amusing hijinks that ensued when the knife disappeared from the bathroom and turned up in the knife drawer in the kitchen

We had one growing up. An old nasty mixing bowl that had been carelessly warped in the microwave.

I think we just grabbed a 4 litre ice cream bucket from the recycling if we thought someone was getting ill when i was growing up

yeah, it makes more sense for small children who maybe can't be expected to maneuver a trash can or make it to a toilet

Mom used it too.

I'm sure she had her reasons! personally I'm done interrogating this fascinating phenomenon
