I'm so tired of this.
Is Star Wars for the masses? Yes, it is intended to have broad appeal.
Is it HEAVILY merchandise?
Yes, obviously.
Is it meaningless fluff?
Only rarely.
Star Wars is mythology for the masses, coming-of-age tales that reflect our real-life internal journeys.
There's a REASON Star Wars holds the place it does in modern culture, and it's not because it's mental fast food. It's because the mythology speaks to our subconscious and we RECOGNIZE what is true about it, even when packaged imperfectly with stilted dialogue and cutesy robots.
I don't know why people think it makes them look sophisticated to claim that Star Wars is vapid and meaningless. Mostly it just looks like they're terrible at introspection and have never once asked themselves WHY they enjoy these stories.
