CUNY is one of the most important institutions in New York. Instead of stupid articles about elite schools, I wish the NYTimes had cared about these colleges instead. I’ve seen first hand how they help young ppl move up in life (myself as a grad student at the GC included)!
The Graduate Center, where I sit, is in better physical shape than most of CUNY, although a far cry from Princeton. (I don't care) But even elite campuses like Hunter, which are fabulous engines of social mobility, are shockingly under-maintained
There are currently 225,000 students in all of CUNY. To contrast, Columbia University has 36,649. I'd say CUNY is the most important institution by a healthy amount, certainly in higher ed.
Absolutely right!
A jewel in higher education!
A tradition of educating working class kids and minorities.
Can someone tell me why the CUNY Engineering School was excluded from Bloomberg’s Cornell & Technicon “gift” of a Roosevelt Island campus? Anything in the NYT?! Nada.
This. We need a new movement across the country to push states to fully fund our public institutions of higher education instead of constant hyperventilating over what the Ivies are doing.
