Wonder why press needs access at protests? Police deny they seriously injured anyone at UCLA. Independent media saw otherwise. Someone allegedly left hospital with 11 staples & 4 stitches in head. These all sound serious to me. www.latimes.com/california/s...
Police report no serious injuries. But scenes from inside UCLA camp, protesters tell a different storywww.latimes.com Law enforcement fired 'less-lethal' rounds as the UCLA encampment was cleared, and protesters say they 'connected with heads and hands.'

Protests aren't slowing down. Journalists: PREPARE! If in California, read LA Press Club's safety tips. Memorize phrase "Penal Code 409.7" for dealing with police. These tips don't address trespass on colleges yet (potential untested legal questions). lapressclub.org/tips-for-saf...

What's decentralized storage ... and why should you care? I was on an episode of NBTV yesterday to explain the underlying ideas and how we use them in real-world projects at Starling Lab.
Decentralized Storagewww.youtube.com We put a lot of trust in cloud storage providers, presuming that they’ll keep our data safe. But what if they're hacked? Or their servers go down? Or what if they decide to just kick us out of our accounts, and we lose all our emails, files, contacts, photos... There's another big problem with centralizing all our storage on a single platform: it turns out the whole world is doing it. Most of the world's data is stored by just 3 companies: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. In this video we’re going to talk about how a handful of companies came to control most of the world’s data, how this could put our data in danger and make censorship easier, and we’ll explore the new world of decentralized storage, allowing control of the internet to be distributed back to individuals. 00:00 The BIG problem with Cloud Storage 02:11 The Move Towards Centralized Storage 04:13 Risks of Data Centralization 07:40 Decentralized Storage Options 10:27 The DJ and the War Crimes 11:44 Conclusion 13:19 WTF We need to make sure that we are protecting our from loss and censorship. Decentralized storage allows us to return to the ideals of the early internet, that promised a connected world where information flows freely. I often think about this photo, not just on Veterans Day. This is my grandfather, an American GI standing triumphant at the end of WWII in Germany -- after defeating his own father's homeland. Look at that smile. Here's what Veterans Day and the American Dream mean to me ...

Flipping through local TV channels in LA for storm and earthquake coverage. They're talking to the owner of a crystal shop in Ojai. Everyone is fine. But there's still a chance of afterchakras. I'll show myself out.

True story. Went to gym to get in physical therapy before storm worsens in LA. Flash flood warning as I walk in. Gym is PACKED. Earthquake hits. Manager says yoga cancelled. People visibly disappointed. FIRE ALARM GOES OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. NOBODY STOPS WORKING OUT. LA.🤷‍♂️

Major “calm before the storm” vibes in Los Angeles right now.

Great perspectives here from Ben Camacho and @shoton35mm.bsky.social, two of the journalists impacted by press rights abuses recently in Los Angeles. Thanks to Mike for casting a light on these problems and having me on.
Journalists have been detained, beaten, and targeted by the government -- right here in LA. How bad is it? What impact is it having? Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts: https://whatsnextlosangeles.buzzsprout.com/1414123/13352107-handcuffing-the-press
