here in Long Beach? When I say OLD timers I mean OLD. If these ladies were 30 in this 1964 photo they would be 90 in 2024. That means many of them are probably dead. But I am even looking for the adult children of people who did housing equality work for Jews in Long Beach, CA to intervew them about

This is an interesting question. I know @rachelpowers.bsky.social and I have talk a lot about this for the region I grew up in, and the bank documents from the 30s and 40s for LBC neighborhoods are crazy amazing to read, but it did not occur to me to look at the old people at temple for this!

Most of them I think were transplants from out east but not all of them would be for sure for sure for sure.

My dad used to drive us kids around neighborhoods in the Chicago area and point out where we hadn't been allowed to live until just a few-to-several years before those drives (even though we'd only maybe be "allowed" to live there in theory at that point).

My dad is only ("only") 81 now. So it's not crazy to think that people in their 80s and 90s here might still be findable who were involved then.

Adreana, I can do some brainstorming. There are a number of families who have been involved since the founding of the Temple! It remains a very lefty congregation

they are because Blacks were actively prevented from living elsewhere. AND that this legacy is part of what #LongBeachCA is attempting to combat with the new #InclusionaryHousing policy
