while waiting during my wife’s post-op, I met a delightful gentleman from Kansas City (KS) who looked like an absolute cross between Jonathan Winters (when he smiled) and Orson Welles (when his face was at rest).
Speaking as someone over 50: what we need is a strong counterculture; we need a bit of a generational divide so that young people really throw the wrench in the works & say “This ain’t gonna fly”; we need something that puts a healthy scare in powers-that-be that their illusion isn’t sustainable.
The lesson I have to keep re-learning: lower your expectations, so that when good stuff happens, you’ll be over the moon & more grateful than you realized.
My son & I were putting last night’s debacle in basketball terms this morning: if you’re playing against a team that just fouls all the time, you gotta make all the foul shots you’re given; you gotta sink 3-pointers; you have to use speed & zig-zag; you gotta know when to put your head down & drive.
Family members who forward you any NYT column by Gail Collins/Bret Stephens feels like the updated version of “If you don’t share this chain letter, you will die.” 😫
