I find this very interesting - what is/ought to be people's tolerance for direct feedback? Baseline everyone deserves to be treated with respect. But when I was young, I often bristled at criticism when I should have seen it as a *mark* of respect.

There is also a potential gender dynamic here that @davidlat.bsky.social doesn't remark on in the piece but could be worth exploring. Do some people hear the same words as harsher when coming from a female supervisor?
Or maybe a regional issue. I just learned that some folks I went to law school with who were from the Midwest had a perception of us Easterners that isn't wrong, but doesn't reflect what is in our hearts....
A followup, perhaps posted after your comment, quotes an anonymous source:
“I clerked in D. Conn. and heard firsthand accounts of people who had heard Judge Merriam screaming at clerks so loudly that you could hear it in adjacent chambers.”
That wasn't in the version I read - sounds like third hand information but consistent with the original allegations that the chief judge took seriously.
