Lindsay's Nebula doc Yoko and The Beatles is so wonderfully poignant and human, I love it and I'm so glad she's made a cut of it for YouTube so it can reach a wider audience. youtu.be/SMOABV_zgrk?...
Yoko and The Beatlesyoutu.be The reasons the Beatles broke up are extremely well documented and even at the height of their animosity none of the band ever blamed Yoko Ono for it - so wh...

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

The Acolyte continues to be Five Deadly Venoms in space, in all aspects good and bad, and I am still enjoying it. Internet discourse about the show is all tiresome.

End of an era as the gov knock down Shanghai's Yu Yin Tang rock venue for unspecified mundane reasons. It was the second location but the first full venue, and one of the hearts of the China band scene. Watched there and played there from opening day to the pandemic.

Youtube needs an instant and comprehensive block feature that nukes channels out of existence for you, in every way. I realize I am not the first person to think this.

i was asked in stream recently what was the best art advice I'd gotten; a professor once told me, "if you want something to happen, you have to make it! otherwise it won't exist." i remember how mad it made me at the time because i knew they were right, i wasn't ready to accept that.

back when KDP was newish, I put an indie novel there, expanded from some writer's group stuff. It ended up reaching some people and getting reviewed in city magazines, which was nice. Here I am being interviewed for Shanghai summer reads in That's and suggesting Ballard

people still reposting Twitter 'main character' drama to Bsky, that shows up in my discovery feed here. Luckily it's minimal, which is fine, but they can just use Twitter and not make the extra effort to bring it to the attention of people who are specifically staying away

Steve Albini had his hand in all the main music, sounds and ideas of my existence so far. What a life.

If you had told me yesterday that the Drake-Lamar diss battle would be won by Macklemore, peeling back the veil of commercialist context-collapse and dissing Imperialism ... well ...

OK BUT the absolute GOD TIER of comfort food is a crisp sandwich. *Cheese and onion crisps *soft white bread with no nutritional value *real butter that is salty and sweet and spread thick. I will accept no arguments to the contrary.

Just come out of my first real meeting with a publisher for my fantasy novel. Might even have to update my bio sometime soon, we’ll see.

Darlings, write that book. Ignore the 'not selling' rhetoric. Write the book. Write your fix-up novels or your trashy book or your serious historical epic or your barely-disguised autobiography or your pew-pew SF. The people who love books depend on you. Do not fail them.

Back in the day when I was not arsed about the biz, attended a writers group, did a short, did a pitch for full-length, wrote it, just put it out myself, and got recommended in That's Magazine's summer picks, in which I also recommend a summer read.

Actually, our tech/fund is focused on improving society and ending suffering, which is a noble goal. Great, let's feed and house everyone, which is achievable right now. Not like that.

Guess I'll put this in a post as we all have replies filtered that don't have likes etc. So, my recent post- pandemic Sub-from-the-outside experience confirms all the articles going round about the biz right now:

No. So out of the loop with live shows this year that Ploho played Shanghai and I completely missed it. Lol, once upon a time in Web 2.0 I had a semi-famous blog based on going to at least two shows per week here. Old.

I love LotR, but whether Tolkien intended it or not, it still comes out as a reflection of a post-WW1 British Empire establishment worldview. Fans tie themselves in knots and have defensive meltdowns dealing with the in-context reactionary aspects, but it's fine. it's not a zero-sum game ...

And holy moly episode 5, for me that was three 'legendary episode' level set pieces burned into my brain, pulled off just half way into a first season ... in a single episode.
