Let's talk about the fish with flashlight eyes. Anomalops katoptron, the Splitfin flashlightfish, has pouches under each eye filled with bioluminescent bacteria. It has a built in reflector & shutter to direct the light or conceal it at will. For years, we didn't know why.

It actually does make a difference. Most behavior is thoughtlessly mimetic but pointing out the underlying logic of what they’re doing and to alternatives can have major effects at the margins.

My brain today morning: Well _something_ has to be done. Just not _that_.

Meta question here. What really is value, and what is valuable? The bentoism way of looking at me+us/now+future is a very good way to look at the broader good, no doubt. Decisions are made in the now (very zen). Is there a way to align now-me value to future-us value in the moment?

A lot more at second and third order levels. Eg: advertising a fake glamorous life with fancy cars and mansions creates a ponzi scheme where you’re preying on young wannabe creator who don’t stop to penetrate fakeness and sacrifice more valuable activities. Or selling snake oil courses or tools
