i think you have to do research and whatnot and be careful and thorough but i think ppl underestimate how bad misdiagnoses and just general bias when it comes to a lot of diagnoses exists

what a lot of people don't seem to realize is that self dxing (done properly, with lots of research and talking to others that are diagnosed) is usually better for many marginalized communities who cannot afford official diagnosis OR can help urge doctors/therapists and get an official diagnosis
it's like how for years i was struggling bc i was on ssris for anxiety and depression but nothing seemed to work, got misdiagnosed as bipolar and that medication not only didn't work but fucked me up, and the entire time i was researching on bpd only for my therapist to diagnose me bc she saw it

I've had an MD call me a liar while taking my medical history cos he insisted it was impossible for my granddad to have had breast cancer.
Yeah, that's right, he got a partial mastectomy & went through 1950s cancer treatment for funsies. My mistake! /s
I figured out I'm autistic 6 years ago, and decided not to go for diagnosis 4 years ago, when several NHS trusts were caught putting DNR notes on autistic patients' files without their consent.
I've had 3 healthcare professionals flag me up as autistic in the last year, if I want validation.
