The American Museum of Natural History holds the remains of 12,000 people from around the world. Most of them are Indigenous. I've spent a year learning the horrifying stories of how these bones got to New York - including talking to a man who found his grandfather in the museum.

Thank you for writing about this. In 2018 Daniel Gross wrote an article on Herero remains held by the Museum and the efforts at the time of Herero activists to reclaim them: www.newyorker.com/culture/cult...

I have discovered that my university still holds remains and sacred items. If all alums did the research on this issue and stopped donations until items were returned, it might make a difference.

The museum was on my bucket list when I got to NYC years ago and I enjoyed it enough to take my wife when we went 2 summers ago. While there we found a display on indigenous peoples down a small hallway that led to an exit. It was pathetic and disappointing and we were amazed...

...such a large institution would give such short shrift to such an important and often horrific part of history. We've been to so many excellent museums that don't ignore that. Based on this and so many colonial displays, I'm not surprised.
