I’m increasingly convinced that one of the biggest problems with the current political moment is the widespread tendency to understand the world in binary terms and draw simplistic inferences about social groups (and then recursively about individuals). Everyone is looking for villains and heroes.
And yes I know this statement borders on the banal. And also, yes I know that I study populism and that we treat moral binarism as constitutive of the phenomenon. But it’s not limited to populists. It’s everywhere. On the various lefts and the various rights.
