In 1986, Fred Brooks described the essential work of writing software as “fashioning abstract conceptual structures of great complexity”.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to explain what I mean by “our work is largely semantic”, and there Brooks had done it already, nearly 40 years ago. And not even in the body of the paper: that was the _abstract_.
