Yesterday Marvin Guy was sentenced to life in prison for killing an intruder. That intruder was a cop executing a no-knock raid. Guy says he didn't know it was police. He's not the first who has struggled to reconcile no-knocks w/ the right to self-defense. A thread. reason.com/2023/11/21/m...

This is Kenneth Walker. After cops broke into Breonna Taylor's home, Walker fired one shot, hitting a cop in the leg. He was charged with attempted murder. That was later dropped. But I highly doubt that would've been the case if the story hadn't captured the world's attention. /2

This is Andrew Coffee. After cops broke into his dad's home for a drug raid, Coffee shot at them. He says he thought they were intruders. Cops shot back, killing his girlfriend. So the state charged Coffee with attempted murder of a cop—and with the murder of his own girlfriend. /3

No one disputes that police shot & killed Coffee's girlfriend, Alteria Woods. But the felony murder rule allowed prosecutors to argue that Coffee had effectively killed her by shooting at the cops. A jury acquitted him of attempted murder & murder. /4 reason.com/2021/11/22/m...

This is Ray Rosas. Cops broke into his home to execute a drug raid on his nephew. After they smashed Rosas' bedroom window, he fired his gun, hitting 3 cops. He was charged with 3 counts of attempted capital murder & jailed for almost 2 years pre-trial. A jury acquitted him. /5

This is Henry Magee. Cops broke into his trailer to look for weed. Thinking he & his pregnant wife were being robbed, Magee fired his rifle at the door. Det. Adam Sowders died. The state charged Magee with killing a peace officer—which could've carried a death sentence. But... /6

...A grand jury refused to indict him for the killing. Magee pleaded guilty to felony marijuana possession & was sentenced to 18 months. Put differently: A man died, and another man's life was nearly ruined, so that the government could send someone to prison for having weed. /7
