Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia)🦉are found throughout the Americas wherever vegetation is low, and soil permits burrows. They're prevalent in the mountain states of Colorado, Texas and New Mexico, especially in areas where prairie dogs create convenient burrows. (Pic: Mac Stone)

They stay in the borrowed burrows in the heat of the day, and hunt insects, lizards & small mammals at dusk and dawn with keen eyesight. They have long legs for ground pursuits, but are also agile flyers.

Groups are usually family units: a male & female parent and any young. One member of the troop usually stands watch for predators: typically coyotes, hawks, domestic pets like dogs or cats. (Pic: Judi Dressler)

Some burrowing owls will retreat into burrows and imitate the sounds of an angry rattlesnake: rattle and hissing. This is a behavioral adaptation called "Batesian Mimicry".

Human encroachment poses a threat to some populations, as do programs to rehome or eliminate prairie dogs that produce the tunnels that burrowing owls call home.

We have them here locally! Cute little murder nuggets. One flew into the door at work a while back. It flapped around on its back alarmingly for a while, then wobbled to it's feet , grumped a bit and recovered enough to fly home. I learned many owl curse words.

They have such expressive little faces, I'm sure their curse words are equally optimized to express their feelings 😉

The fun part was the little guy was dusty, so he left a perfect owl face upon the door glass. Sad I didn't get a picture of it.

Staying in their burrows in the heat of the day could be a huge benefit, given global warming, unless their prey disappear of course.

I wonder if flooding is a major threat?

Good point. I suppose this depends where they live. Also, would it be rainfall, or would it be sea-level rise.

I’m not proud of this but in the Air Force it gets boring on Alert. You basically live with your aircraft. To pass time at Minot ND we discovered if you chase a PD into it hole. It quickly pops up again! 💡I grabbed some cotton string looped a slip knot into and put around the opening. I caught 100%

Everyone knows a burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground. Why the hell ya think they call ‘em burrow owls anyway?!
