“Mental Health AI Startup Spearheaded by Three Computer Scientists with No Mental Health Professionals on Staff” is the “before” headline of a “how could we have possibly known what would for wrong???” sob story.
“Somewhat alarmingly, none of Sonia’s founders have backgrounds in psychology. But Aeberli [the CEO] says that the startup consults with psychologists, recently hired a cognitive psychology graduate, and is actively recruiting a full-time clinical psychologist.”

Why did no one tell me that Sal and Gabi Break the Universe has a diabetic main character??? I’ve had this book on my shelf for a couple of years, finally started reading it, and… surprise! 😍 Bonus YA rec: The Girls Are Never Gone. Also trying to do my part for more #T1D rep in #kidlit :)

Technically today is the last day of my sabbatical. (But yeah, it's still summer, so it's not REALLY over until mid-August.) But it did force a self imposed deadline to finish latest novel revision. Sent back out to actual humans to read. Also I read 12 novels in June. :)

Today I procrastinated from revising this actually finished novel to open my scrivener folder and remind myself about all of my unfinished novels. Starting in 2009-ish. THERE ARE EIGHT. I have EIGHT unfinished novels on my hard drive. 😭 FWIW I think at least two of them are salvageable. :)

I’m finishing up an academic book about HCI and law (with three other co-authors) and we told the editor we’d need to push back our deadline slightly if Chevron was overturned, to make some edits. 🙃

Maybe the plane WiFi was on the fritz just so that I could blissfully still believe we had chevron deference for a few more hours.

With one night by myself in NYC during a quick trip here, I decided to go to Sleep No More for the first (and I assume only) time before they close soon. My official review is “what just happened?” but also I’m really glad I got to experience it. (AMA, and not sure I could spoil if I wanted to lol.)

My June committee gauntlet is over! 🎉 One proposal, four defenses. All successful: and congrats to Drs. Simpson, Das, Chang, and Brown. Also I’m exhausted. And this is the last official week of my sabbatical lol.

Last week I ran a short workshop for a small group of educators on leveraging social media (professional presence, public education, networking, etc.) and it went better than I thought. It turns out maybe this is a thing I’m an expert on now!

A few years ago I wrote this set of recs for children's/YA novels to get kids/teens excited about coding. cfiesler.medium.com/novels-to-ge... But also! I would like to recommend two middle grade novels I've read recently that might also encourage kids to think critically about tech 🧵

Update: Almost 1300 entries in the AI ethics & policy news spreadsheet now. I’ve been thinking of writing something: “I read a thousand news articles about AI ethics and all I got was this lousy sense of impending dread.”

Multiple people have reminded me recently that Bluesky does indeed exist. I’m actually analyzing more Twitter migration data right now (it’s from a year and a half ago so heavy Mastodon focus). How would you all describe your perception of the audience/communities that have landed here?

I stitched together the videos I made about the honesty study data fabrication scandal. (i.e., the case against Ariely and Gino.) I think this is a fascinating example of data forensics, but also points to some incentive problems in academia. :-/ https://youtu.be/m3dDZKeCayk

I see bluesky just dumped a whole bunch of invite codes. I wonder what inspired a desire to scale faster… 🤔
