But white American culture is so antagonistic to using public space to socialize. They put strict social norms into practically every space they govern that prevent people from freely doing that.
Hanging out in common space is important, & that’s something white American culture barely gets. The dude who plays numbers is set up at a table entertaining friends all day in my corner store. Dudes are loitering on corners socializing. In Morocco, everybody’s hanging out in the street & cafes.

That’s the part of gentrifying that is particularly evil to me because not only are they displacing long time residents they’re telling Black Harlem denizens to stop playing music or checkers outside. Telling people HOW they should live in a space is incredibly violent to me.
