Just finished the 7th session of my Mythic Bastionland campaign The players encountered a few omens, then sought the advice of a Seer. Upon doing so, they uncovered a coup in progress & the new player was forced into a Knightly duel that ended in a double Scarred, double KO draw! #ttrpg #OSR 🎲

It was so sick! In MB duels don't take turns, all damage is dealt to both parties simultaneously. The PC scarred the enemy & they got concussed and down to 5 Vigor. But the PC exhausted themselves denying the damage. Next turn, they got scarred by the enemy & knocked down to 2 Vigor. Both then KOed

Oh, the simultaneous aspect is a cool wrinkle on the EB system!

Yeah, it's only for Duels & Jousts and it's meant to be non-fatal, but the stakes were really high for the PCs The whole battle lasted 5 rounds, and until round 4 the PC was completely uninjured

I love the idea of non fatal combat to resolve story issues

Definitely gonna try and add more duels where I can because this was a major hit for the whole party, especially the duelist, who's only on their 3rd ttrpg session ever They've been really good at avoiding combat though, I think finally recognizing that OSR is much deadlier than 5e

Yeah I think there is this idea that OSR inherently means death and what it really means is “you have the ability to think yourself out of situations”

Exactly this! Like, not only are the raw numbers lower, but you only have 3 attributes. It's up to you how creatively you employ them. It helps that 2/3 Knights in the party have a social special ability, so they're looking for ways to talk it out
