A few things learned from prepping a sermon on practicing Sabbath, based on Isaiah 58:
1. Isaiah's discussion of sabbath comes immediately after the part where he says this:
2. Some Jewish commentary asserts that working on behalf of the community is allowable on the Sabbath because "the business of heaven is permitted to be attended to," at courthouses, theaters, even the circus!
3. A couple more pieces of commentary:
"This is what God said to Israel: 'My children, what do I seek from you? I seek no more than that you love one another, and honor one another, and that you have awe for one another."
Again, that's from a commentary on Sabbath.
4. One rabbi says to another: "What about those who say, 'Our shepherd, feed us, support us, on the shabbat?'"
The second rabbi responds "That is the formula of the blessing."
