Minnesota has been seeing an influx of trans people moving here. I personally know multiple people who fled conservative states over the past couple years because there was no longer a home for them there.
i wrote about this for my column on tuesday but i think we ought to think of policies restricting gender affirming care as explicitly aimed at expelling a disfavored population from the state in question www.nytimes.com/2024/07/11/b...
For L.G.B.T.Q. People, Moving to Friendlier States Comes With a Costwww.nytimes.com Laws targeting gender-affirming care have uprooted thousands. But places that are more supportive can also be more expensive.

And the article addresses that! I've done stuff with PFund in the past and a friend of mine is on their board. They're one of the groups you should absolutely donate to if you want to help young LGBTQ people in the Midwest. www.pfundfoundation.org

Also, when I tell people I moved here from South Dakota, LGBTQ go "of course" while cishet people ask why. Guys if you wanna be an ally, understand why someone might want to leave where they grew up.

This also is why the "liberals abandon and don't understand red states" narrative was so grating post 2016. Many of us did not move out of our hometowns because we were looking for a fancy big city life™️! We were looking for safety.

Yup. Once trump was elected, I knew I had to get the fuck out of SD.

I don't want to leave the South. I'm super Southern, but there isn't a southern state that's any better for queer people...so I'm at a loss where to go

Nobody who has been to South Dakota would ask why someone would leave South Dakota.

Even absent anti-LGBTQ laws... Leaving South Dakota seems like a good idea. Why is anyone asking "why"?!

Little annoying seeing people suggest moving away from the US or out of red states makes you a privileged coward. Meanwhile, they are valiant soldiers who will remain to fight the good fight. I don't want to fight!

i haven't seen anyone suggest that?

I saw a thread around the debate.

every time a queer person or family with queer kids leaves for friendlier waters, i feel a real sadness over losing another unique person from our community. I 100% understand they do not feel safe/cannot exist freely in this state, but it just amplifies the monoculture.

yeah it does suck! I adore Minnesota and probably would've made the move either way, but I know that's not true for a bunch of other people!

I adore Minnesota, but I also love my community and work really hard to make it an inclusive place. But i know that isn't enough when they are trying to legislate people out of existing.

I have friends in WI who have a trans kid and their exist strategy if things get too untenable where they are is to move to Minnesota.
