At no point in the modern era has a party's official platform been of any consequence either to attack or promote. Like the idea of the conventions themselves as deliberative bodies conducting real business, it is a vestigial tradition to keep party functionaries and political reporters entertained.
For an indication of how much party platforms matter, the Republican platform has officially endorsed Puerto Rico statehood for decades, and done so more consistently and unambiguously than the Democrats.
