Today I may finally discharge my first can of bear spray, but not because of the grizz that walked though the property this morning.
We get lots of cans of spray left by our cabin guests. We’d prefer to donate them all to park rangers… but they don’t take expired cans.
A good excuse to practice!
New Photos: Guyana 2024 Wildlife & Scenery
The 2nd half of my new Guyana collection, from January’s scouting trip. I never imagined a spider would be my trip highlight, but I was absolutely thrilled to see the Goliath Bird-eater in person for the first time.

The much longer grass here in Kenya (compared to March) can make wildlife spotting and photography a PITA sometimes… but it’s also quite beautiful, and might offer up a better setting for my subjects.
I’m not sure this composition’s a big success, but it was a fun moment nonetheless.
Another endangered species we’ve encountered here in Kenya is the African wild dog. It’s nice to be able to get out on foot with them, but it hasn’t quite paid off. We were lying in the road with dogs coming at us, when suddenly they veered off and tore apart two dik-diks behind the bushes!
I’m back in Kenya for a short tour this week. We’ve already had some nice sightings in our first 24 hours. Among them, a brief encounter with a few Grevy’s zebra families. With fewer than 3000 of these handsome zebras left in the wild, it’s certainly a treat seeing the younger generation up close.
New Photos: Guyana 2024 Birds
My Guyana pics are finally finished. I just haven’t had time to let everyone know. I guess the BlSk audience gets the first look.
Lots of cool and colorful species on this one, AND I got my lifer Harpy Eagle (albeit a youngster).

Yellowstone Spring 2024 Trip Report, Days 8 - 9 (The End!):
My spring visit with more of a whimper than a bang, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have fun times, and we still saw lots of interesting stuff (including this Swainson’s Hawk).

Yellowstone Spring 2024 Trip Report, Days 6 - 7:
Today we searched for a rare, recently born white bison calf (the news wasn’t great). Another rare creature was the focus of our attention yesterday: this snowshoe hare (only my 2nd ever pic).

Yellowstone Spring 2024 Trip Report, Days 4 - 5:
I kicked off my photo tour with a long bear stakeout, a surprise weasel encounter, and plenty of rain. Don’t worry, it’s supposed to dry out the rest of the week.

Yellowstone Spring 2024 Trip Report, Days 2 - 3:
Time was limited, but I had very little to, er, grouse about these last couple days in the park.

Yellowstone Spring 2024 Trip Report, Days 0 - 1:
I’m back in Yellowstone, filing my traditional trip reports for the next ten days or so. Lucky to see a badger/coyote hunt today!

New Photos: Kenya 2024 Birds
I’ve published two galleries of new images from last month’s Kenya trip. The Birds gallery features several new species, including this Marsh Owl.

Making solid progress on my Kenya photos, and I just KNOW my BSky audience is waiting on pins and needles to see them all.
Here’s a Rock monitor mooning the camera to tide you over.
The fun and thrills from my adventures are usually countered and nullified by the tedious attempts to ID species once I return home. All this angst over a frog I photographed from a terrible angle and too far away just because someone may want to see a picture of “frog pattern” 17 years from now…
We’ve been lucky to see this beauty the last two nights, but a daytime sighting sure would be nice!
Though the worldwide population is almost certainly much larger, it’s estimated that there are only 14 confirmed wild melanistic leopards in the world at this point. How special to see one of them!
I’m exploring Kenya for the first time. Just two locations with some very specific goals, but it’s nice to land some new species, including a surprise lifer: Marsh Owl!
My July Brazil tour just had a cancellation. Yes, we’ll see jaguars, but it’s about so much more than that… ONE spot open!

While in Borneo, we saw many Buffy Fish Owls, to the point where I eventually tried to get some wider shots showing them doing their favorite thing: fishing.
Not easy given the dark conditions (and not wanting to spotlight for very long), but this was the best result. Maybe something better in ‘25?
Secrets of Borneo photo tour, October 2025:
I haven’t even finished processing my photos from Borneo scouting (this binturong was a major highlight), but details on my ‘25 tour have been released. Limited to only FOUR guests!
