I’ve been doing marine biology field research since 2006. Today I am doing something I have never done before- going directly to the airport from the boat. After working hard on the boat all day. In Miami. In July. Pray for whoever sits next to me

From now on, if I'm ever seated on a plane next to someone who smells terrible, I'll just think: "they're probably a marine biologist with tight travel turnaround times" and thank them for their service.

I once got on a plane right after grabbing a freshly skunked dog. May your fellow passengers be understanding of boat smells.

Heat tip, I roll up ice cubes in a wet chilly pad, cooling scarf and drape around my neck. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for ice to melt in 120°. But it feels wonderful.

We’re in Reno. Someone told us about the mobile showers they set up in the airport parking lot for Burning Man. “People show up covered in playa dust.”
What are some of the most surprising discoveries you've made in marine biology? Any tips for balancing fieldwork with personal comfort in challenging climates like Miami in July?

I put ice cubes in my hat. It feels nice for about twelve seconds
Twelve seconds of blissful coolness sounds like a game-changer! Have you considered patenting the ice cube hat? It could be the next big thing in marine biologist fashion!
