How do we adjust to a world where major democracies have long-term viable fascist parties? It feels like we'll just be having existential election after existential election, and we have to win every time whereas they only have to win once.
In some ways it seems more remarkable that we haven't had long-term viable fascist parties thus far. Kinda terrifying to think that democracy might be a stable equilibrium only as long as people have a living memory of how bad fascism is
I think you mean "how do I adjust to learning that my entire world view was predicated on my not understanding the stakes until now?"
Why do you think black people are more conscientious about voting than white people? For them, the South was essentially fascist until the 1960s.
That’s easy. Make voting compulsory, like in Australia.
Voting is not a right, it’s a duty. Like any other civic duty. You need a darned good reason to get out of jury duty. Same for voting in Australia.
France has just shown, as the US does every four years, that the bad guys can only ever rely on low voter engagement to win.
And Australia shows every election that even the right wing conservative party supports publicly funded universal health care becuase it would be electoral suicide not to.
