if i had to pinpoint the beginning of the internet's long decline i would say it's when "search-engine optimisation" became a thing burying the worthwhile beneath the profitable has been the death knell of every industry ever

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched Adam Conover’s essay on how Google absolutely borked the Internet, but SEO was a huge part of that argument youtu.be/P7NHABs76mg?...
How Google RUINED the Internetyoutu.be Google sucks now. Here's why. Get 20% off DeleteMe US consumer plans when you go to http://joindeleteme.com/Adam and use promo code ADAM at checkout. DeleteMe International Plans: https://international.joindeleteme.com/ You may have noticed that Google isn't what it used to be. Search results are buried under ads and sponsored links, and when you do find a result, it's overflowing with SEO garbage. You aren't imagining things: the internet is getting quantifiably worse. In this video, Adam explains how the same Google that once helped make the internet more accessible to countless people has doomed the internet itself for the foreseeable future. I love going on Amazon and looking up a product and getting results like "cat brush for cats pet brush cat brush animal brush for cats brush" as like every other official product title.

I work for a Chinese owned company in the e-commerce space (no, not Temu or Aliexpress or whatever) and a lot of our product listings are like that too 😭

This is always when the trouble starts:

"all the money is already mine. You people are wrongly holding onto it. Fork it over!"

The phrase "burying the worthwhile beneath the profitable" might be iconic. Very nice turn. Thank you.

Yea. Working with SEO from the side of running a website is frustrating as fuck. I at one point was told to put INVISIBLE TEXT on my front page for SEO to scoop up and I'm like this is BRAINDEAD stupid.

See Cory Doctorow's ongoing series on "enshittification"

And then Google attached length to value and now everyone has to wade through the history of flour to get to the cupcake recipe.

I kind of hate this but I ended up paying for justtherecipe.com

I have some amount of sympathy for Google because their product worked and because of that everyone adjusted to cheat their system

People living on 5 or 6 sites will definitely BE what finalizes the decline into death of an Internet that isn't a billionaire run profit driven hellscape full of data mining for sales/dev to AI modelling. Normalizing these giant town squares didn't help. Exterior is everything being strangled.
Avatar
I'm personally interested in what happens after those 5 or 6 sites blow themselves up chasing grift after grift. There will be casualties when the AI bubble bursts. Just countless billions being set on fire everywhere. Facebook is already hollowed out after the metaverse bombed. 50 billion, gone.
Avatar
It's in somebody's hands. 50 + 44 = $99 billion in social media refuse already on the books after Elon fails & hot potatoes X for 25% return before it's less than 1% in value. There is an exchange of wealth that is hard to track but billionaires are useful idiots on my scorecard to AI devs rn.
Avatar
I know somebody is getting rich but it would seem the people getting rich are only interested in setting up the next grift and their targets are these tech giants. What happens when the tech giants can't buy in or won't? The people getting this money don't seem interested in making anything useful.
Avatar
Can't and won't factors will be a problem for people looking to make money after these folks rug pull the industry of opportunity and positive sentiment then move on and refactor their plans and distribute power with this new wealth, or retire. Retire is hopeful, not happening but hopeful.

Your second statement is more profound than your first!

An unregulated global free space seems like a great thing in theory. Until you recognize that this is basically an invite for ruthless capitalism to do its thing.

Suppression, too! Reputation dot com? Bury yourself in algorithms.
