marché d’Aligre, in the 12th arrondissement: best in the city

We took my two tweens last summer, they loved it, partly cause lots was centered on food! Highlights: Ice cream at Berthillion & falafel in the Marais. We also all enjoyed climbing the stairs of the eiffel tower, believe it or not.
Avatar
best patisserie: Aux Delices de Paris-Reuilly (strange but true) streetscape watching: Mouffetard/Latin Quarter. and a great market there (at Place Monge)

Took our then- tween on a bike tour of city back in 2019 it was loads of fun.

Buy macarons and go to Eiffel Tower for bfast (imo don't bother going up). Walk around Montmartre, get ice cream/crepes. Look for mini food/wine festivals - we stumbled across one at the base of Sacre Couer. Catch local buses - you get to see local spots and when you see something fun just get off

Take the Seine ferry everywhere! I love the 13th, very low key vibe. Butte-Aix-Cailles is wonderful. Make sure to take some empty water bottles to get the magic spring water (it's free) The farmers market under the rail line in the 13th is incredible. Super friendly too. All tween approved

OK dad saying "Butte" and laughing less tween approved

Also Chez Mamane in Butte-Aix-Calles is amazing. Even our picky eating tween loved it

I've imprinted on the Rue du Buci market in the 6th, used to be on Saturdays
Avatar
not my own favorite spot, but many happy tweens can be found lurking in the catacombs

You’re not there early July are you?
Avatar
early june, avoiding olympics. you?
Avatar
July, but getting out before the Olympics descend (hopefully!)
Avatar
watch out, we were advised olympic crush means even in june everything is very sold out / booked already, tickets hard to get, pompidou closing for long renovations, etc, and this is proving true!
Avatar
It’s ok, we’ve done everything touristy before so just like to sit around having picnics 😂

The Friday morning market in front of the Saint Denis abbey is fantastic (as is the abbey, All The Royal Graves and Best Gothic but few tourists go there because Scary Banlieu). Everyone in their best mosque finery, great food ingredients and ancillaries. Real banlieu mood at its best.

(And needless to say, completely safe for everyone who doesn't faint at the thought that Paris includes Black people.)

Bastille farmers market (Thursday and Sunday) is city centre and a fantastic spread, also good for people watching since it's right next door to the Marais. More of a Levant mood. parisjetaime.com/shopping/mar...

Best patisserie: Carl Marletti. Go to the farmers market Place Monge on Sunday morning, stroll down the rue Mouffetard, then load up on pastry at Marletti

The museums will be absurd at that time of year. I always recommend the Cluny, though, even if you think you're not interested in medieval stuff.
Avatar
Loved walking around the Lenoir market and the neighborhood to the east of it.

Bastille market on Sunday is a bit of a zoo, but totally fantastic. Visit to the sewers fascinating and maybe tween-approved? And I’m a huge fan of the 1h bateau mouche tour. Touristy yes, lovely also yes.

Last few times we went, it seemed like many young folks liked hanging out around Île de la Cité, the bustling streets around Latin Quarter/Saint Germain, and especially all the hills and valleys and byways of Montmartre. The French kids always seemed to congregate in derelict spots along the Seine.

If your kids are <12, you should absolutely take them to the Best (Possibly) Playground in the world, in Les Halles, a mini-world surrounded by high gates that every hour lets in exactly 100 7-12YO kids, _with no adults allowed except 5 pros_ for 1 hr of multicultural mysterious shenanigans.

Both the catacombs and sewer tours are fun for tweens (if they are ok seeing thousands of skulls— creepy! ). Also good sometimes uncrowded: magic/automaton museum near metro St. Paul

Dinner in Bercy Village, an old wine warehouse district converted into a hip multi-restaurant zone (metro Cour St Emillion). Also has a Fnac store, UGC cinema, and park with lots of youth.
Tweens, you say? La Conciergerie. Make sure you point out the back entrance where Marie A. made her final exit.
