Why are dental benefits siloed off from the rest of our health insurance? It goes back centuries, to "barber dentists." Dentistry itself was cordoned off from the rest of medicine. Read more from @emilystewart.bsky.social www.vox.com/23901293/den...

Also important to recall that most people don't "need" their health insurance—that is, don't have catastrophic health expenditures—in most years. So you end up with a population that is meh on the system, with majorities saying they're somewhat or very satisfied with their own health insurance. 🩺📊
So while employer-sponsored insurance creates plenty of problems — job lock, cost-shift onto workers, limited leverage to control costs, etc — it's also working just well enough for just enough people that it's really hard to dislodge: www.vox.com/23890764/hea...

Plugging my own research on this, an important dimension of employer-provided insurance with which too few are familiar is the impact of ERISA on self-funded employer plans, which deny patients important legal recourse in challenging wrongly denied claims —> low insurer accountability wrt denials.

This is also a really great time to update your advance directive paperwork with your doctor and your loved ones! Even if you're young, you still need a directive in place in case you're in an accident, or something happens. Have your medical wishes on file and designate a medical power of attorney.

really picked the wrong time to jump back into microblogging, the "news" is so dead (excepting of course all of the real news, but you know what I mean, I am not here to riff on Ukraine)

am I understanding correctly that Congress agreed to spending levels for the coming appropriations bills as part of the debt-limit deal and House Rs are just... reneging on that agreement? did I miss something here?
