This article has been in the works for over a year, and I’m so beyond excited it’s finally out. It’s a solstice miracle!

(I’m sorry, but I’m going to be obnoxious about reposting this for at least the rest of the day)

Thanks y’all for doing this work. I imagine that it’s rather thankless but it’s really important and I’m grateful you’re on it.

Wow! I wish I had had this when I was writing my book, which has 3 chapters on Robert Yerkes and the origins of IQ exams in the US. Would have been great to connect to such current example.

I hope you get to do an updated edition and can include it!

Such an important article. Already shared with multiple colleagues. 🙏🙏

Thank you!! I'm really glad that it seems to be getting attention, and maybe if we're lucky we'll even see some actual, real-world changes in response!

Also important to share with health professional learners who sometimes seem dubious during our lessons on eugenics and scientific racism that this stuff still lives ...
Avatar
Sadly, that work never seems to end

The learners get the signal importance -- I'm biased but think we teach it well enough. But no matter how much we emphasize that history is a circle not a line, there's resistance to seeing it around us all the time ...

Like those "COVID affects IQ" articles that are shared by well intentioned people who forget to question "IQ" as a measurement in the first place.

This was an incredible read, thank you and your coauthors for their work!

Great stuff, thanks for this all!

Thanks for the mention! The full article with archival references is here - people should send a message to my uni email if they need access. muse.jhu.edu/article/8992...

Not at all, thanks for your work! (One of my major fields back in grad school was 20th century intellectual history focusing on right wing thought, so between that and scientific racism, your work has been very important to my thinking).

I'm sorry, I'm only on the first paragraph and nearly threw my phone at the wall. You're telling me that this dude received a lifetime achievement award in racist pseudoscience and PEOPLE KEPT TAKING HIM SERIOUSLY???
Avatar
you'd be surprised at how many scholars want racism to be true. even if not for explicitly "i hate X group of people" reasons, but also for "i can't admit that i benefited so much from racism to get where i am, so these claims must be true" reasons
Avatar
I was this close to cleaning my glasses because surely that date wasn't 2011. Surely. Surely??? Like, I get the embarrassment of realizing you benefitted from privilege. But it isn't actually that hard to admit it and work to improve things for other people?

Wish you didn’t have to focus your efforts on refuting nonsense like this, but grateful you’re doing it!

Thank you for your work 🖤🙏🏻

Such a frustrating topic but necessary work. I'm heartened by your research nevertheless.

I always knew the national IQ database was nonsense but I appreciate the effort it took to dig into it and will be sharing this article a lot. I think many people just sort of assume it must be true because it seems so official and gets cited so often so I hope this prompts these journals to change.

Congratulations! Great work.
