Trump will not stop pushing if you give him a slap on the wrist; he will push as far as he can possibly go. We've already seen this in action when the House failed to impeach him over the Mueller report and he immediately embarked on extorting Ukraine
Doesn't this also give him a roadmap for specifically how to commit crimes in ways that are immune? Like, couldn't he have taken much more extreme action in 2020 by simply sticking to official acts?
Criminal prosecutions of Trump would've been delayed or recommended light sentences out of step with the severity of his crimes with or without this decision. My concern is that SCOTUS just gave Trump the green light to launch state-funded pogroms and wars of aggression if he clinches a second term.

So there’s the decision as a legal document, and the legal consequences that come from it. Then there’s the message that MAGA supporters take from it. I bet some of them already see the message as “the law is ours now.” What will they do now? Will they allow black people in swing states to vote?
