John Foster reading from his new novel HATE HOUSE at Brooklyn Books & Booze last night! The audience, including yours truly, was enthralled!

The amount of flies in our apartment this summer is ridiculous. It's like THE AMITYVILLE HORROR in here!

"The service – which had been set to take place at the Paris City Hall during the Olympics this year – was cancelled due to concerns that the ceremony would be targeted by extremists. A smaller service is now set to be held at a non-disclosed location with fewer attendees."

"Since the Hamas massacre of October 7 and amid the ensuing war in Gaza, services at the synagogue have been regularly interrupted by anti-Israeli protests in the area." This is Australia, not Israel, but like many antisemites, they think all Jews are the same.
Sydney’s oldest synagogue targeted by anti-Israel activistswww.thejc.com The New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies condemned the ‘despicable act,’ calling it ‘pure, unadulterated antisemitism.’

That "Best of Both Worlds, Part 1" cliffhanger: "Mr. Worf...fire." So good! #startrekthenextgeneration

In honor of #GialloJuly, I watched THE FIFTH CORD, a giallo I haven't seen before. It was good! A hard-drinking, ladies-man journalist investigates a series of murders that seem to be related to a language school, but as people close to him die, he becomes the prime suspect. (1/2)

Inspired by watching STOPMOTION earlier this week, I finally watched Phil Tippett's 30 years in the making stop-motion animated MAD GOD. It couldn't tell you what's going on, but the artistry is incredible. So much dark creativity! And also, so much poop!

DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS is a fun horror-comedy with great practical effects, an insane amount of gore, and lots of prog rock. It reminded me a lot of an over-the-top 80s flick I would have rented from the video store on a Friday night.

Disappointing, disturbing news about both Neil Gaiman and Alice Munro. My anger is aimed only at them. My heart goes out to fans of their writing who are trying to work through their feelings about all this.

I've seen a lot of "descent into madness" movies lately--it must be a sign of the times--but STOPMOTION does it well. The actual stop-motion animation used in the film is fantastic. It's also unexpectedly gory! Recommended if you don't mind a slow-paced horror.

I watched another Series 1 #DoctorWho episode tonight, "The End of the World." Christopher Eccleston is so goddamn good!

I'm so glad I finally saw Issa Lopez's TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID! It's a beautiful, poignant, sad film, but it's also full of fantasy and humanity. It reminds me of PAN'S LABYRINTH that way. And the child actors are so good!

I did some preliminary work today on my next novel, a thriller titled A GLEAM IN THE DARK. A bus caught in an epic rainstorm, a group of strangers trapped in a flooded rest stop with a vicious killer, and a secret that's waited decades to be revealed.

I hope this is good. I loved WANDAVISION and Agatha Harkness, but I'm so tepid on the MCU right now. I'm hoping DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE will pull me out of the slump!

If you've seen THE FIRST OMEN, you've seen IMMACULATE, and vice-versa. There are some story differences, but beat for beat they're practically identical. I think I liked THE FIRST OMEN MORE. It's got a stronger cast. That said, IMMACULATE's climax definitely goes for broke!

I watched "Rose" with dinner, the first episode of the #DoctorWho revival from back in 2005. It's so much fun and has so much energy! (But the less said about Mickey and the garbage bin, the better.) Christopher Eccleston is truly outstanding. How I wish we'd had more seasons with his Doctor!
