seems like what happened in france is that centrism and leftism each identified the other as the favorable alternative to fascism, voters who identify with either accepted this as true, and the far-right was marginalized as a result, which is... the opposite of pitting them against one another?
In France, the left coalition comes in first, Macron second, the far-right third. The best way to defeat fascism is not centrism, it’s a strong left.

yeah, this very clearly seems not like "the way to beat fascism is leftism, not centrism" but "what beat fascism this time was leftists and centrists in coalition"
