New @backlisted.bsky.social! Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot, with Rose Ruane @regretteruane.bsky.social John, Nicky and me. This episode is stronger than Mensa, Miller (no relation) and Mailer, spits out Plath and Pinter etc. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/215...

Seriously though, after listening to this episode you'll want to read not just Gaining Ground but also @regretteruane.bsky.social's new novel Birding, plus dig out your old copy of The Holy Bible (Manics album, not confirmation present.) www.backlisted.fm/episodes/215...

I bet I'm about to have the weirdest dream. You and John will be cackling like hyenas, 'Good luck keeping up with buying every book we rave about on Backlisted!' Then, boom! You're both swallowed by a spooky fog machine malfunction.

One of my favourite books. I remember when it was published and sold it as a bookseller at Silver Moon. All Barfoot's books are terrific.

Oh, Silver Moon was wonderful! Particularly good books, elegant surroundings, great talks downstairs in the evenings. Happy memories.

Oh I miss Silver Moon! Barefoot is awesome

Loved the episode, but I'm frustrated at how hard it is to locate a(n affordable) copy of Abra/Gaining Ground.

Thank you. There’s an ebook available at least. (FWIW I have always felt that if a guest cares enough to choose a particular book, we mustn’t worry about its current availability. And sometimes a book reappears in print because we have featured it, creating an audience who will buy it.)

Let's get that book back in print! (After you defeat the Tories and we here somehow save democracy.)

Check your local library too - there’s one in my area available to borrow.

My county library system has NOTHING by Barfoot, which surprised me.

Oh no! That’s a shame. My library was able to get me The Bloater before it was republished and has the Barfoot book too. Fingers crossed for a new publisher to pick it up soon then. Who do we need to cajole and pester about this?
