I think young and online. Some are ESL speakers which is a valid reason. But they'll pronounce it like zinneh since a lot of languages don't have silent e's

Thank you for your brave honesty. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to miss the etymology between zine and magazine, I just grew up amongst the punks, for whom zines used to be essential text
