Newspaper headlines got me remembering how the GOP all took Trump seriously, but not literally. As opposed to Kavanaugh assault accusations, which they took literally but not seriously.
Electoral politics is about feeling. Trump makes us feel like we want to reject him, and the knee-jerk reaction to an always gaff-prone Biden being framed as incapable permits people to deflect or diffuse that feeling to something else. Minds can change, but feelings are their own bosses.
The 770 riots were wild to keep track of in real time. Violent breaking stories are usually full of rumors at the start, almost all of them not true. Now it seems every different rumor coming from insiders turned out to all be true at the same time.

This American Life just featured a story about the Michigan GOP, which I randomly caught. These state party orgs probably decided after Trump to double down on outsiders. Turns out they don't know how to raise money, which is their one job.
