The Seattle Police Department just sent the first installment on a records request I made in September 2023, and informed me that the second installment will be ready in late March 2025, a year and a half after the request.
By any standard, this is ridiculous.
Why does the NYT (or anyone) take preposterous statements like this seriously (and, in turn, pretend Bezos is a Serious News Expert)? Newspapers don't need 100 million subscribers, they need sustainable business models that allow them to pay people to do good work.

This Kristof piece about "West Coast liberalism" ruining a part of the country where he recently pretended to live is about what you'd expect from a carpetbagging New York 1 percenter , but the obsession with trans kids and tampons is perhaps the most deranged and telling part of his argument.
By the way, after 23 years covering the Seattle council, I'm old enough to remember when we were just allowed to walk the hall in and out of council office and talk to people like human beings!
Morgan Spurlock tried to rewrite the narrative about the harm he did to women, in part by saying he fucked up (and was drunk). This woman wants to give him wreaths and tell the rest of us we've "punished" all the other "#MeToo men" too much.
The illo of women's hands silencing him is a nice touch.
of all the terrible things about Seattle PD's communications department right now, their lack of familiarity with Seattle neighborhoods is perhaps the most telling
(This location just south of downtown is nowhere near "South Seattle," which is itself not a neighborhood)
Once again, Horsey toes the general liberal line (flying pro-insurrection flags is bad) while credulously accepting Alito's excuse (he just can't control his wife!)
Boomer says women need to start "sacrificing" for the good of the world, by having babies even when they don't want them.
"Marriage is tough. Raising kids is difficult. Both require sacrifice and self-denial. A lot of people are deciding it is not worth it."
I'm no sports expert, but I'm pretty sure this Seattle Times op/ed is saying cops are like sports stars who will quit if they have to do menial tasks and mental health workers are like cheap labor hired to muck out lockers and clean jock straps

welcome to the @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social' magical fantasy world, where "criminals" in stolen cars outrunning cops—not streets designed to be deadly—are the reason pedestrian deaths are up, and also the "powerful bike lobby" is responsible for road design
can someone please tell me if this illo (for an alarmist @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social piece arguing kids are "addicted" to their phones) is AI or just really bad
note the use of passive voice here. "Earlier drafts" did not "emerge from city hall." I requested a copy of a specific previous draft, which was heavily edited before the final was released, as part of my reporting, as did the Urbanist. Nothing "emerges" without reporters unearthing it.
Kurt Cobain, a Gen Xer, might appreciate the irony of learning that his band still appeals to both of the extant generations—Baby Boomers and millennials
continually frustrated that my contributions to the city's (generally wonderful) P-Patch program are going toward eco-block installation to "protect" community gardens from homeless people, because that's what the people who "run" the garden happen to want
Big yikes to this cartoon, written by a white boomer who still uses terms like "gangbanger" and thinks the problem with Democrats is that they stereotype people
Interesting that a guy who was outed as a serial sexual predator is spending $8 a month to belittle a successful younger woman by calling her an immature little girl.
Wow it's just a flood of bozos in my inbox this week, including this guy who "wonders if I ever listen to tapes of myself" and says I remind him of a junior high kid.
Not listening is literally free! Not writing to insult me: Also free!
Next time the Seattle Times cries about the death of local newspapers, remember that they seriously believe that yelling at the city council from across the room is the same as violently breaking into the Capitol and attempting to overthrow the government
