OK so there’s these human brain ‘organoids’, mini human brains with wee eyes on them grown from stem cells in jars. Swiss ‘wetware’ startup Final Spark has hooked them up to computers and offers access to their computing power for $500 a month. finalspark.com/neuroplatform/

Super interesting; have you ever thought how weird it is that Climate Change is rarely mentioned at all in movies and on TV? David Roberts talks to Anna Jane Joyner who's organisation, Good Energy, is working to make climate a part of the cultural conversation.
Today on Volts: climate awareness & anxiety are rising, especially among young people, but climate change remains relatively invisible in TV & film. I talk with Anna Jane Joyner, who is tracking this -- and trying to change it.
How climate change is portrayed in popular culturewww.volts.wtf Climate awareness is growing in the real world, but it remains rare in popular entertainment, as illustrated by some new research on climate in film. In this episode, Anna Jane Joyner discusses the ef...

We're about five minutes from a small but significant proportion of people unwittingly being best friends online with an off-the-shelf LLM AI bot. And a larger proportion being completely aware that they're in the same situation.

That Bryan Johnson reverse aging guy is arguably more interesting as a sociological than a medical experiment 🤔 It's crazy how offended some people seem to be by what he's trying to do. It seems pretty likely that there'll be more generally beneficial outcomes, though.

NEW: I wrote about building with straw and how it has got slightly more high-tech in recent years. Rather than simple bales, think carefully designed timber panels packed with chopped straw - and highly automated factories to make them. www.bbc.co.uk/news/busines...
Should more British homes be built using straw?www.bbc.co.uk Cheap, highly insulating and sustainable, straw has a lot of potential for the building industry.

Guys, is it ok for Taylor Swift - and possibly just Taylor Swift - to use a private jet? I hope that we can still save the world, but we should also be able to have Nice Things.
I think Swift - and she's literally my go-to example - is one of a rare examples of people who legitimately use private jets; her physical presence brings joy to huge numbers of people. Her carbon footprint is shared between them.

@georgemorgan.bsky.social George, do I remember you saying something about certain types of MVHR having a dehumidifying effect? Do you have any pointers to relevant information? I presume that this is a part of the heat recovery process?

Phenomenal stuff here on the @volts.wtf podcast; Dr Leah Ellis of Sublime Systems explains their method of making cement with hugely reduced CO₂ Worth it for the concise explanation of the scale of the problem, this has absolutely huge implications. www.volts.wtf/p/we-are-clo...

Could do with putting together a half decent ESXi server at home… I've got a really fast fibre Internet connection, so it would be a shame not to! Tricky to know which way to go… the are some pretty cheap Epyc servers coming out of China (though too many dodgy QC chips…)

Gradually catching up with the @blindboyboatclub.bsky.social podcast and I've got to his interview with Louise O'Neill. It's fascinating to hear her talk about, essentially, the sexism of low expectations; the defensiveness too many men exhibit seems to be rooted in that.

I'm starting to see sans-tinfoil folk on the bird app getting worked up about 15 Minute Cities (as in the supposed ghettos we're all going to be forced into, ready for our extermination, or however the conspiracy theory goes). What is going on? How has this nonsense gathered pace?

Annual note, construction is practically already decarbonised if we want it to be. This involves re-learning to stop doing some things.
