Let’s also not forget how the iconic “Akira Slide” has influenced genres the whole world ‘round…
Released in Japanese movie theaters on this day…do we need to mention the title? One of the biggest influences to global cinematography and pop culture, Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA debuted in theaters on July 16, 1988.

On this day back in 1985: The Dirty Pair TV series started its television broadcast run on NTV. Undeniably the most iconic heroine pair in anime history?

Man, some convincing evidence that X is pretty freaking toxic ☢️
Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵

Belladonna of Sadness I believe, actually caught a cinema screening a few years ago. Incredible work. The 1970s was such a decade for anime, I've only scratched the surface.

Something about a rabbit animated on paper rather than cels from the 1930s.

QUESTION FOR TODAY: What is the oldest anime show or movie you remember watching? Would love to see how far back people have explored!

I believe it was this, from 1997/1998

Speed Racer would be the oldest, but I wasn't born for another 12 years when it was originally run, so I came to it later. The first anime I remember watching was either Voltron or Robotech, and I'd have to look up when they were aired in Detroit as a kid to know which was first.

Starblazers was on local TV in Seattle in the early 80s. I absolutely loved it, I would watch every episode before heading off to school

For me, the 60s anime I've seen/own are Speed Racer,Princess Knight (French dub.... still need to watch the rest) and Puss in Boots. I guess Animal Treasure Island is early 70s? It is really fun. For 70s stuff, Cutie Honey, Gundam, Rose of Versailles, Gatchaman, the Star Blazers movies & other stuff

I had to check but I watched every episode of Lupin III part 2 (1977) that aired on Adult Swim, which was just slightly older than Future Boy Conan.

Clarifying that I mean the OLDEST one you’ve watched, not the first

Miyano as Mousse isn’t a bad call. Poetic and dramatic, wears his heart on his sleeve, but also makes himself into a dunderhead over love.
Or maybe the crossdresser, duck guy or the pantyhose guy. Miyano needs more chances to ham it up or be campy/effete.

Can’t wait for Nabiki to be portrayed as a shyster JK who deals in Furinkan High crypto and NFTs of half-naked Ranma

Let’s fill it in. Ranma (male): Ranma (female): Akane: Nabiki: Kasumi: Kikuko Inoue, amirite Kuno: Mamoru Miyano Ryoga: Shampoo: Mousse: Gendo: Soun: Kodachi: Ukyo: Happosai: Tofu-sensei: (We’ll go from here.)

Already saving Mamoru Miyano for Kuno. He’s off the board.
I mean mostly Ranma’s two main voices. Kappei Yamaguchi and Megumi Hayashibara are still mainstays in the voice-acting community, but I’d love to hear who could be considered new blood for the role.

24 hours later, and I’m still on a high about the notion that Ranma 1/2 is being redone. But…it also has me concerned. Do we refresh the starring roles with new voices?
