The meaning behind Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" has been horribly coopted and mangled by cynical politicians and We Are The World-style Pollyannas. The original text was an overwrought love sonnet to Beethoven's second cousin, Joy, whom he pursued in unseemly fashion for several years in the 1820s.
