All of these Eva knockoffs failed to understand what made Shinji fundamentally tolerable (at least some of the time), and so they end up with protagonists who are not only stupider than the viewer, but also lack motivations beyond whining.
this is why i like Martian Successor Nadesico, who Spike Spencer also dubbed for. Akito has fucking problems and for once they’re not daddy issues, but there’s something he can do in the face of invasion and capitalism
