Here's a dark pattern for you. I bought a refundable flight on American. When I got the ticket confirmation, nothing said it was refundable. I called customer service and got confirmation. Turned out... I needed to cancel the flight. 1/4

Wrote about yesterday's Congressional hearing on sunsetting Section 230. It was painful to watch, other than Kate Tummarello's heartfelt testimony. But, Congress somehow thinks that getting rid of Section 230 will magically make the internet perfect. It's very dumb www.techdirt.com/2024/05/23/c...

NEWS: #KOSA has advanced through the House Energy & Commerce subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Science. This was expected. But the top Democrat on the committee, Frank Pallone, surprised everyone by clearly articulating his concerns with the Duty of Care in KOSA. This is huge!

Bullshit. Liza Goitein put it better though: “Although some senators fought valiantly to protect Americans’ civil liberties, they could not overcome the barrage of false and misleading statements from the administration and surveillance hawks..."

Bsky #ECPA people: Do you think that police can obtain the records requested in these cases with a D-Order? In effect, police are finding out what content (currently unknown) people viewed, and normally that requires a warrant. 1/2
Feds Ordered Google To Unmask Certain YouTube Users. Critics Say It’s ‘Terrifying.’www.forbes.com The federal government asked Google to turn over information on anyone who viewed multiple YouTube videos. Privacy experts say the orders are unconstitutional.

The police got D-Orders, which require "reasonable grounds" and are a lower standard than a "probable cause" warrant. In the NH case, the reasonable grounds are that "the threat and apparent live stream is part of a pattern of recent similar conduct". What does that mean?

One interesting thing about this case is how incomprehensible the "reasonable grounds" for the search are. The application states: "the threat and apparent live stream is part of a pattern of recent similar conduct". What does that mean? Did the perp call and say he was watching in the other cases?
