I'm so sorry to hear of the death of Prof Raymond Gillespie (Maynooth University): a hugely knowledgable and ground-breaking historian, and the nicest of people. www.ria.ie/news/irish-h...

The Irish history world is shocked by Raymond Gillespie's death. An inspirational teacher, he recruited me to early modern studies, suggesting the perfect subject for me. It was the beginning of my great adventure with Irish parliamentary history which has enthralled me & shaped my life.

A quick reminder for everybody before ye all get too excited. Normally the December solstice falls on the 21st December for us in Ireland, but every 4 years, on the year before the leap year, it falls on the 22nd. The moment of the solstice this year will be at 3:27 tomorrow morning, Irish time.

I wrote a review of Liam Kennedy et. al's 'The Death Census of Black '47: Eyewitness Accounts of Ireland's Great Famine', which has just appeared in Irish Economic and Social History. It's an excellent resource, and a *free ebook* 🗃️ doi.org/10.1177/0332...

Tough year for art sales and I depend solely on it for a living, so if you like anything I do, I'd appreciate if you'd keep me in mind when buying gifts for friends or family. If you hate what I do, I'd appreciate if you'd keep me in mind when buying gifts for enemies or nemeses.
📌 Quick note that www.ciaraioch.com is now taking Christmas orders, and value bundles have been added to the store - each print is made in Ireland, shipped in eco-friendly packaging, and free hand-printed cards, stickers, mini-prints and bookmarks come with all orders 🎁 Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
