The Spotted Owl surveying crew in the Stanislaus N.F. is finding lots of 🦉s! They help the Forest Service avoid disturbing owls & their nests as they perform treatments to reduce the risk of severe, catastrophic wildfires. L to R: Preston, Jess, IBP Biologist Ramiro Aragon & his son Nathan. 🪶

The colugo (Cynocephalus volans) looks like what happens if you squeeze a flying squirrel too hard. Found in the Philippine islands, they're sometimes called "flying lemurs" in spite of not being lemurs & not capable of flight (they're good gliders, though!). 🧪

Here's another bird I hear often and rarely see: common yellowthroat. "wichity-wichity-wichity" near every local marsh and pond. Have you heard one? #birds

Worm-eating Warblers don't really eat worms. Most of their diet is caterpillars, spiders, beetles and other insects- not earthworms/flatworms/roundworms. They forage near the ground and eat insect hiding or pupating in clumps of leaves.

Scootie made a couple nice visits today 🥰 Resting on our pergola bench - that tail! Cleaning his beak in gravel after snacks 🪥 Keeping hydrated, so important, especially if you’re in a heat bubble! Gazing down the embankment past the fence, deciding where to go next! #birds Greater roadrunner
