Everything else aside, can I just say how freaking jealous I am that they announced elections, held "primaries," and elected their government all in a MONTH. Our goddamn presidential campaigns have been going on for almost TWO YEARS.

And the UK did theirs in six weeks. The US is not well served by the “permanent campaign” mode we’ve fallen into.

Au contraire, mon frère! Think of the job creation! All those campaign folk being out of work would severely impact state economies, and hammer print shops nationwide!

We did not elect our government. Our government is appointed by our (elected) President. We elected our legislature. The current PM has announced his resignation and the President is expected, but not obligated, to appoint a new one from whichever block holds the most legislative seats.

You're going to get long campaign periods when elections happen at regular intervals. Most of europe, you get taken by surprise when one's going to happen. UK actually had a scandal about the recent one, because some people with inside knowledge were gambling on when the election would be.
