Since the Extinct blog re-launched in January 2023, I've written 25 entries in my "Problematica" series. My goal has been to write short-ish essays that are both rigorous and fun to read. Here I've assembled all 25, on topics from William James to ancient Mars... www.extinctblog.org/extinct/2024...

Just finished collaborating on an interdisciplinary grant (with 8 other departments!) proposal to start an environmental studies certificate at SHSU. It's a relief to be finished! It was a great learning experience, but a lot of work. Fingers crossed!

Democracy Now! did a short segment comparing the historic 1968 protests and university crack down at Columbia to the ongoing events at Columbia today. It's striking (chilling?) how Columbia's current response is more authoritarian than its response in '68. youtu.be/QwIJcHfqaeA?...

Sam Houston's dance department lets me audit their ballet classes every semester. This has led to wonderful relationships with the dance faculty and MFA students. This year, I've had the pleasure of serving on an MFA dance thesis committee.

Finished the first semester using ungrading practices. I did not give students letter grades or numerical scores. Instead, I gave them qualitative feedback and asked them periodically to reflect on their feedback to argue for the letter grade they think they earned. I had to agree.
