Calgary’s Peace Bridge. An excellent example of how investing a bit extra into high quality design can completely change the face of a city.

Not your run-of-the-mill parking garage. “Platform” in downtown Calgary is 7 storeys with 503 parking stalls, but it’s designed for future flexibility with features like higher ceilings and a central atrium, to facilitate future conversion into commercial or residential uses #yyc

I realize I’m late to the game on this one. But I haven’t been to Calgary in awhile. So it’s the first time I’ve seen their new Central Library. Wow. #calgary #yyc #architecture

“Silva Cells” going in under a sidewalk on an Edmonton street. These provide for extra soil volume and reduced soil compaction for street trees.

Got a small sliver of a lot leftover at the end of the block? A very skinny housing infill in downtown Kitchener.

A new “continuous sidewalk” in Kitchener. The design differs from regular sidewalks in that it doesn’t dip down to road level at intersections. It continues at an uninterrupted height. This slows cars turning onto the street, and it also reinforces pedestrian priority through the intersections.

When the City of #Albany was looking for ways to better connect its downtown to the Hudson River waterfront, they landed on this creative solution. They converted an under-utilized access ramp on Interstate 787 into the “Albany Skyway” pedestrian and #cycling link.

Building new housing where an expressway used to be. This is the Inner Loop in #Rochester. A former 4-6 lane highway that became one of the 1st expressway removals in N. America. Just a couple years after it was removed, over 500 units of midrise #housing now sit where the expressway used to be.

Almost finished. Conversion of this former downtown Hamilton manufacturing building into “The Pearl” with 15 affordable homes for indigenous families by Sacajawea Nonprofit Housing. #housing #affordablehousing #urbanism

From 75 parking spots to 55 homes. The new CityHousing Hamilton affordable housing building on this former downtown city parking lot is almost finished! #housing #urbanism #cities #hamont

Someone once suggested to me that the walkability of a neighbourhood could be determined based on the number of staples in the hydro poles. I always liked that idea.

From a bus storage yard to a new urban park! This is Canal Park in Washington D.C.

Caution! “Enfants en liberté” on the “ruelles vertes” (green alleys) of #Montréal.

A beautiful city making itself even more beautiful. The #Montréal MURAL Festival.

Leave it to #Montréal to build protective barricades in a way that still creates a pretty functional and inviting public space.

Traffic calming and climate resilience. Montréal’s famous planted boulevard bump-outs. They’re everywhere. #climateaction #safestreets #cities

Efficiency of garbage collection is one of the arguments I’ve heard used against parking-protected #cycling lanes. #Montreal seems to have figured it out.

Happy #WorldBicycleDay! This is the 1880s CP rail bridge in #Ottawa, recently re-opened as the Chief William Commanda pedestrian / #cycling bridge.

I do love a small neighbourhood restaurant in a converted house (The Glebe neighbourhood, #Ottawa).

Checking out the new (almost finished) O-Train Trillium Line in #Ottawa. The direct access to the stations from the multi-use Trillium Pathway is a really nice feature.

Now THAT’S a nice #transit station! (Rideau LRT station, #Ottawa).

Been to a lot of cities. Seen a lot of buildings. But this is still one of my all-time favourites (Marina City in #Chicago by architect Bertrand Goldberg).

I like when #transit systems do this. Real-time next-train arrival screens OUTSIDE the subway station at street level. So you know if you have to hurry or not BEFORE you start into the station! #Chicago

The “Low-Line” … an emerging new public space under the “L” in #Chicago.
