Because of one of your tip reminding how to hide desktop icons, this is now my default setup.
As such I am not tempted to save files to desktop.
I just have just a "scratch" subfolder there for very short lived files. Because Desktop is easy to find in "save" dialog box.

Yep, I work in education. I think IT got tired of having to talk people through house to find our daily use programs so they locked them on the desktops. Many teachers are notoriously bad at technology.
my documents folder is filled with 7000 folders created by every program I've ever installed because developers believe appdata is a lie; my downloads folder only has things I, a human being with interest in viewing or using something, downloaded.
I can actually sort and find things there.
