I do want to make more of an effort to go to the theater because The Bikeriders is the exact kind of film where I'd go "I'll catch up with it on streaming" and then never think about it again unless I make the effort to go see it. And I'm very glad I did.

And it's also nice to see Mike Faist continuing to break out after stealing Spielberg's West Side Story. I like that he has that Donald Sutherland quality of being able to bounce between leads like in Challengers and eye catching supporting parts like this.

Having lived through the great white boy hunt of the 2010s when Hollywood kept desperately trying to make a series of personality vacuums happen it's wild to see Austin Butler look up from a pool table in his Bikeriders' introduction and go "Oh, an actual star, I knew you'd eventually find one."

The Bikeriders (2023). The American urge to escape from it all and then coat that escapism in as many rules, codes, and rituals as the world supposedly being rejected. Great cast, great cigarette smoking, and a sharp understanding of how cool is usually a series of performances when you lack it.

It's really interesting thinking about this one and Good Morning, Vietnam in both being big audience hits that are also honest about the bleakness of war, and how the American war machine has to keep inventing the most palatable stories to keep it running.

This independence day I'm watching a 90s blockbuster with a charismatic Black leading man trying to salvage a bad situation, that's right, 1996's Courage Under Fire.
