It would be immoral, we were told, to pass debt on to the next generation. Handing them a country that simply doesn’t work, by contrast, is apparently fine.

Absolutely nails it. Brilliant piece, Jonn.
Excellent piece, Jonn! There is a vacuum in the mentality of successive Tory govts where there should have been a clear grasp of the notion of “civic responsibility”. Things began to go adrift in the Thatcher days, when council housing was sold off without any thought of replenishing the stock.

The Tories will be passing the baton on to a Labour government which has renounced its fundamental responsibility to The Working Class and has adopted Tory restrictions/economics/policies as the way to grasp power. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli... Rees-Mogg is right-wing even by Tory standards.
Jacob Rees-Mogg: Keir Starmer would be welcomed by the Tories with open armswww.independent.co.uk The top Tory and arch-Brexiteer said the Labour leader sounded recently like a Conservative minister launching a leadership bid.

Rebuilding a society takes investment. With Rachel Reeves opposed to a wealth tax, refusing to cap the bonuses of her Banker chums, and promising more austerity; that isn’t going to happen. The tax burden will fall on the majority, and society will crumble further.

'No such thing as society' Mrs T misunderstood (wilfully?) a complex sociological point, ie that society isn't an active, homogenous entity. Instead, it was adopted as an excuse to destroy communities and public services.

Superb article, and spot on. How did you feel Starmer’s first steps announcement went the other day? I felt like it was cleverly done - a significant shift back in this direction, but with headline statements a Daily Mail reader could agree with.
