UVA and Virginia state police are raiding the Gaza solidarity encampment next to the Rotunda. They literally changed the bylaws, which previously permitted tents, a few hours ago. The encampment had been going quietly for several days.
It seemed like they were going to do this raid last night, but they didn’t. It seemed they were relenting, or maybe giving a reprieve for the rain. (It was raining hard.) Now seems like they had to change the rules. Seems … illegal?
Worth noting that this is immediately adjacent to the place the Nazi tiki torch rally happened in 2017. The police did not stage anything like this response to that one, even though the Nazis were beating and pepper spraying people.
They can just change back after, in their ongoing good faith attempt to figure out just how to uphold free speech right perfectly, don’t worry, top minds
