highly recommend anybody with serious mental illness not watch "six schizophrenic brothers" on HBO, I'm like five minutes in (I also read the book and hated it) and it's incredibly inflammatory and stigmatizing

Does the book suffer from the same problems? I remember it got a lot of praise, but I wasn't interested in the subject matter.

it definitely completely ignores any alternate explanations for the brothers' behaviors (for example, substance use, personality disorders, childhood trauma due to abuse, growing up in a low income and severe military family with 12 siblings and not a lot of oversight etc

the premise is "look how horrible schizophrenia is, it leads to all these terrible outcomes" when we know that those outcomes are more attributable to the aforementioned things. i don't want to dismiss the illness, but acting like it's the whole story is ludicrous to me
